This poem is the heartbeat of my new song “Still Drawin’ Breath.”
If you’ve ever fought through guilt, darkness, or just tryin’ to keep breathing—this one’s for you.
Woke up with the sunrise bleedin’ through blinds,
Ashtray full, and a head full of signs.
Another name on my lips I can’t place,
Another ghost I forgot how to face.
They talk about grace like it comes in a frame,
But I’ve met the Lord in the dark callin’ my name.
Not in a steeple or Sunday parade—
But in motel nights where my soul came unmade.
I’ve been broke, been high, been dead on my feet,
Preached to the floor and confessed to the street.
Still hear the lies that ring in my ear,
But the fake fall away…
And the real draw near.
I’ve prayed with a pistol layin’ next to my head,
Cried on a Bible I ain’t ever read.
Loved some women who ran from the light,
And I chased 'em through shadows thinkin’ wrong felt right.
Don’t build me no statue, don’t write me no song,
I’ve lived too damn crooked to pretend I belong.
I’ll walk that back road with nothin’ but fear—
Where the fake fade out…
And the real draw near.
Yeah, I’ve been low, been wild, been haunted for years,
Drank from the bottle and baptized in tears.
Still got some hell that whispers too clear—
But the fake fall away…
And the real draw near.
So if I go, let ‘em know I was real—
Didn’t chase fame, didn’t sign no deal.
Just a man with a past and a song in his chest…
Still limpin’ forward…
Still drawin’ breath.
“I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the Lord.”
—Psalm 118:17 (KJV)
